Q: After installation sometimes things like dents and snags happen to the carpet. How should we deal with these?
A: If small tufts or sprouts are sticking up above the surface of the carpet don't pull them. Cut them off with scissors. Sometimes certain types of carpeting will develop little balls of tangled fibers or lint. Again just clip them with scissors or gently pull them off. Shedding is also common in new pile carpets. The loose fibers or fuzz will diminish after several weeks of regular vacuuming. Finally, dented areas of the carpet can usually be removed by stroking the dent with the edge of a coin or using a hair dryer while tugging upwards on the tufts.
Q: We had coffee spilled on brand new carpet. What do we do?
A: Coffee spills should be blotted with a paper towel to remove as much of the stain as possible then use a solution of 1/3 cup white vinegar and 2/3 cup of water in a spray bottle to saturate the spot. Remove excess moisture by blotting. Next make a detergent solution by mixing 1/4 tsp of detergent solution (non-lanolin or bleach such as Joy) and 1 quart of water. Apply a small amount of detergent solution to the spot. Using a blotting motion work the detergent into the spot. If spot is disappearing continue applying detergent and blotting until spot is gone. Rinse with tap water from a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture and apply a pad of weighted paper towels till dry. If spot still is not removed, try moistening the tufts of the area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for one hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. No rinsing is necessary. Remember NEVER use a circular motion to remove spot as this may destroy the texture.
